EDITOR’S LETTER • While it might be true that many industries hit a go-slow in the month of August—a good chunk of Europe simply turns off the lights and decamps to the beach for four weeks—that’s certainly not the case at Robb Report. There’s a lot going on with this, our annual travel issue, full of adventure, exploration, and some pretty hard-core decadence, too. But before you dive into that, two bits of news to announce.

Northern Exposure • Calistoga Depot looks to put the quiet Napa Valley spa town on the gourmand’s map.

The Extended Tour:

Pinch Hits • THOUGH MUCH MODERN salt is produced in industrial quantities, with little concern given to finesse or flavor, this wasn’t always the case. Indeed, for centuries, salt was a distinctly local product, an expression of both terroir and technique—Hawaii’s blood-red crystals, for example, or the gray, pebbly salt of France’s western coast. Here, our four favorite gourmet varieties from around the world.

Don’t Go Home Without It • A handful of taly’s most beloved family-owned hotels are morphing into luxury brands of their own. Here, four in-house items worth traveling for.

Beyond the Douro

Split Personality • TAG Heuer’s new ultra-high-end chronograph shows that the longtime accessible-luxury brand now wants to compete in the big leagues.

The Books on Every Watch Expert’s Bookshelf

About That Time • In conversation with the driving force behind L.A.’s largest, most intrinsic art exhibition.

Must-see PST • If you don’t have time for several dozen shows, here are Weinstein’s top three.

with… Blake Johnson

Rethinking Red • Toeing the line between sophisticated refinement and punkish edge, oxblood red has reentered the design scene, taking center stage as the season’s hottest color.

Small-Scale Thinking • Architect Todd Saunders wants to change the way we approach hospitality design-from the ground up.

World Builders • At Bellerby & Co., hundreds of hours are spent crafting globes that don’t just depict the planet–they chart, in mesmerizing detail, your individual journey or your family’s history upon it.

Electric Slide • The battery-powered Mercedes-Benz G 580 has impressive all-terrain chops, but its road manners are wanting.

Time Flies

Year of the Cat • A new breed of power catamarans is redefining the twin-hull paradigm in both style and functionality.

Evolution of the Species

Risky Bizness • Once the undisputed king of business jets, Boeing is betting that its BBJ Select will finally help it reclaim the crown.
