Preschool-Grade 2 Budding chefs get a boost of independence with this visual cookbook designed to guide pre-readers, step-by-step, through the creation of 19 snack recipes. Using basic kitchen tools, everyday ingredients, and recipes that include minimal text, kids can tackle the creation of staples like fruit salad, sandwiches, and chocolate cookies. Sequential, bird's-eye photographs showcase both process and product, and the bold, mostly solid backgrounds keep a clean aesthetic. Basic food names are jazzed up with cutesy monikers and portmanteaus, like Froothie and Banuffin. Recipes vary in complexity, time commitment, and serving size, but, helpfully, all are single-page endeavors likely to appeal to young palates. The author uses an icon to signal situations that benefit from adult support, such as frequent use of a sharp knife and the oven. Young chefs may need extra assistance translating the recipes on their first go, but suggested variations and the clarity of this infographic approach will inspire confidence and should appeal to families that embrace early elementary autonomy. Care for some Yummus, anyone?
