Once on land, Kit and her midshipman, Cooper, find more than they bargained for when they discover that the war criminal known as “La Boucher,” who caused a massive magical disaster and was believed to have died in the resulting fire, is still alive—and he’s practicing even more dangerous magic. Equally surprising is the man who comes to their rescue when they’re arrested as spies: Col. Rian Grant, Viscount Queenscliffe. The second novel in Neill's Napoleonic-inspired fantasy series (after The Bright and Breaking Sea, 2020) features Kit Brightling and the Diana sailing into a building war. Empire-builder Gerard Rousseau has escaped his island prison, and the wild magic of his new right-hand man threatens to destroy the Third Coalition before it can get going. It's up to Kit, her magical Alignment with the sea's currents, and her loyal crew, to sabotage the Butcher's plans. One bright spot of this novel is the sparkling chemistry between Kit and new beau Grant--the reader will be hooked from the first moment of his appearance, and teased by their seeming inability to find time alone. Kit is an admirable heroine, spunky and strong, and her quick thinking and dry humor make her an entertaining protagonist. The world building is occasionally a bit rough, and can feel inconsistent, but Neill's complex, genuine characters make the book well worth the journey.
