En la década de 1920, el compositor mexicano Julián Carrillo (1875-1965) desarrolló un sistema de música microtonal al que llamó Sonido 13. Aunque su papel como uno de los pioneros del microtonalismo en la música docta occidental llevó a Carrillo a ser considerado un ícono por la vanguardia europea entre los años 1960 y 1970, su música y su legado han permanecido mayormente desconocidos entre músicos, académicos, críticos y público en general.
