Zakka, a Japanese word that translates to many things, is used to describe accessories and other items that enhance a person's home or life through their beauty and usefulness. The term was popularized in the United States by blogger and sewist Rashida Coleman-Hale, whose two books helped familiarize Western sewists with the style. Now, zakka is everywhere, and this collection, which focuses on projects featuring hand embroidery, joins a crowded field. Though most of the projects are cute and fit in with the zakka aesthetic as it is commonly known, a few resemble country-primitive crafts--an odd choice that doesn't seem to mesh with the rest of the book. Some very basic embroidery instructions are provided; novices may wish to consult an embroidery reference for more extensive guidance. VERDICT This book may entice readers who enjoy hand embroidery, but Coleman-Hale's two books (I Love Patchwork and Zakka Style) provide a better introduction without some of the filler included in this collection.
